bump......
after putting up with telstra stadium and telstra dome.... and finaly getting used to it... has anyone else gotten really pissed off at the fact that ANZ STADIUM WAS/IS IN BRISBANE atleast it always will be for any league supporter from the last 15yrs.... its like SFS changing its name to Suncorp stadium.... it is damn anoying and ANZ really should have shown some imagination in the name so as to not clash in anyway with a ground formerly called the same thing.... "stadium ANZ" "ANZ stadium @homebush"... anything other than simply ANZ stadium...

Quality rant... but no corporation spending tens of millions of dollars is going to go for their second choice name simply because a few stadium gunzels and sports historians are going to be a bit confused.Steady wrote:bump......

It mentions the NRL there as well and poor attendances. Fact is, the venue averaged 15034 in the regular season. This is the best in Sydney excluding the SCG which only hosted one game. The average is boosted by some big one off crowds (4 above 25,000) but when you take those away it is still one of the best in Sydney.
All this makes it disappointing that the NRL is playing both preliminary finals at the SFS. Arguably, it is no more stressful to get to Homebush than to Moore Park from the northern beaches or the Shire.
I think Sydney FC should take the odd game there as well. I'm sure the crowds would respond (even if the view behind the goals is not the best).Tom Smithies of the Daily Telegraph wrote: ANZ Stadium looks to Socceroos matches for big crowds

ANZ Stadium will bid to bring an extra Socceroos World Cup qualifier to Olympic Park as part of a high-stakes campaign to revive the ground's flagging fortunes.
Sydney's flagship stadium is reeling from a disastrous year in which it has come under fire for hosting poorly attended rugby league games, and has now been snubbed by the NRL for two of its biggest matches.
Highlighting its predicament was the news yesterday that Queensland will host five Socceroos games over the next five years, emphasising the ferociously competitive marketplace ANZ is in even for showpiece events.
Soccer chiefs yesterday announced the deal with the Queensland Government, when it was confirmed next month's qualifier with Qatar will be held at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium.
It leaves three home games still up for grabs in the first half of 2009 and although ANZ Stadium is guaranteed at least one, CEO Ken Edwards yesterday revealed talks were already under way to persuade Football Federation Australia to stage a second fixture there.
After months of criticism over poor attendances at NRL and AFL games at ANZ, stadium chiefs are anxious to bolster the number of well-attended events staged there, with Edwards confirming ANZ would seek to host key games for a potential western Sydney A-League team.
With Queensland Sports Minister Judy Spence saying a Socceroos fixture could bring in $10 million to the local economy, Edwards said he hoped NSW Major Events would be able to attract internationals to Homebush.
"We're not concerned about the deal with the Queensland Government at all, it simply continues arrangements the FFA have already had," Edwards said. "We currently have a three-year agreement with the FFA to play at least one major Socceroos game a year here, but we are in discussions with the FFA about holding more than one.
"We have a new major events board for NSW and obviously we'd be hoping the FFA would be having positive and fruitful discussions with them about future games.
"That's what our business case is built around - we host Bledisloe Cups, grand finals, State of Origins and the big Socceroo games as well as the big Swans games."
But Edwards was adamant that the stadium would continue to keep faith with what he termed "developing markets" - with five NRL teams, for instance, calling ANZ home - but conceded it had been a rough ride.
"They're developing markets. We have the blockbuster games but we also have the others, and we have a belief that club rugby league can be bigger than what it is. Sure, we've copped some criticism this year for the way the crowds have been but we've had five clubs playing here and, to be very honest, our strategy was that all five wouldn't do as badly as they have.
"But we still believe club rugby league crowds can be bigger, based on the membership model that the AFL have, and obviously we're talking to the NRL about that."
With at least one western Sydney A-League consortium keen to stage high-profile games at ANZ, Edwards said the stadium could showcase a new entrant to the competition.

The NRL is playing it's preliminary finals at the SFS because the two home teams, the Sharks and Sea Eagles, have fans who really don't travel well. Also, those two clubs had two of the lowest home crowd averages this season.
Addtionally, there's a very good chance they'll be playing two non-NSW teams. Eagles vs. Warriors followed by Sharks vs. Storm would not draw many out at homebush.
If the Roosters get up though, watch Manly cry bloody murder as they're forced to play a home final at their opponents home ground.
At the end of the day, these games will draw 35-40k max. That'll look great on telly at the SFS and have a rocking atmosphere at the ground. The same cannot be said of ANZ.
