Softies  . So you prefer a more modern boutique smaller capacity stadium with all the mod cons. - OK, can't go pass the Flavian Ampitheatre -
Image

Retractible roof that was fully adjustable on all sides to allow for the angle of the sun. #55,000 capacity, multi-use stadium (even catered for water sports) with premium seating, but all seats had an excellent view close to the action, hundreds of food and beverage outlets, easy access to bookmakers, private boxes for those who could afford them, and 80 entrances, able to be emptied in less than 15 minutes, right in the heart of the city.

Has seen better days, and still awaiting a video screen. Nevetheless, with several redevelopments/renovations, it was used constantly for nearly 500 years and apparently had a great atmosphere. Afterall, the Romans loved their sport - considered it a matter of ... life and death!

and see that stand on the left hand side - it totally looks out of place and obscures the views of the stands on either side. They should've knocked it down to make way for a newer stand when Rome won the new SuperXIV franchise ahead of Naples.

Hi people!

I am one of the greek guys that a while ago "invaded" your website and overwhelmed you with reports on the olympics...( ).
Our website is doing well, there was a period after the olympics that was quite ...nostalgic I can say, but now its really busy and one cant follow all the postings.
So, after so long time I decided to "pass by", see how you are doing and say hello.
Now, just some remarks on the panathenaicum stadion etc etc...1st of all, the 2nd position is to me acceptable only based on emotions  . You cant compare it with modern stadiums. It is a very beatiful one, all made of marble, has a relatively big capacity (15000) for its "age", and is mostly suited for very nice concerts and events in the summer nights...but not for sports. Apart from that, some corrections; Yes, it was used for the 1st modern olympics in 1896...but the stadium is much older (actually ancient...BC).

It was just renovated and enlarged for the 1st modern olympics...while the ancient olympics started as you have mentioned in 776 BC, but not in the Olympus ( which is the highest mountain in Greece, 3000m...you know, where the gods used to chill... and some 300km north to athens)...

...but in Olympia, a town in the peloponese, 250 kms south to athens.

Well, there are many olympias in greece (women, towns etc), can be confusing.

Anyway, I think I am out of the scope of the topic, so forgive me.
I wish you all a nice summer (lucky you  )....greece is getting darker, colder, and soon, also whiter.

Cheers and talk to you again.

Build on 329 BC, renovated between 139-174 AC by Herodes Atticus...destroyed in the middle ages ( as many ancient things). A correction, its capacity is 45.000 and not 15.000 (I just looked for details...)

Go to bed...

G'day, Giannis - sorry I didn't find this site in time for the last Olympics. And thanks for correcting my hasty errors. At first I wasn't sure what you were on about in pointing out the difference between Olympus and Olympia - until I re-checked my original post and found the stupid mistake I'd made. At least I got the western Peloponnese bit right - if nothing else! What makes this extra  for me is that I consider its within my true specialist area of knowledge (albeit for me its probably more Roman than Greek, though the two were intertwined for centuries).

Now as for those Circus Maximus critics, whats next??

sandyhill wrote:OK - I get your point about Lords and "... only cricket". Being a Western country, we tend to see things the same way as Europeans and Americans - thus we tend to overestimate the international strength of sports such as basketball and especially baseball, and under-estimate the world-wide of cricket, as the vast majority of supporters are in the Asian subcontinent. But due to the vast numbers and its strength there, world-wide, cricket has more followers than those 2 American sports combined.

By memory, the most popular world sports in what I read was
1 Soccer
2 Cricket
3 Table tennis
4 Cycling
5 Boxing
6 Basketball
Unsure about the rest - baseball I think was 8th or 9th.

Also last years world two top rating sports telecasts -
1 Cricket India v Pakistan ODI
2 World Table Tennis champs in China

Sienfeld - very popular in English speaking western countries, (combined pop <400m) but not at all in the subcontinent which has proved very resistant both to American TV and movies (God bless 'em). And they have over 3 times the pop of the Sienfeld audience. I can assure you that thanks to all those hundreds of millions of subcontinent cricket fanatics, the MCG (and yes, also the SCG) would be more well known to more people on this planet than Yankee Stadium.

I totally agree that competing stadiums for totally different sports like the example you gave is far too subjective, and nothing more than a bit of fun. Having said that, I'll categorically state that this (below) is by far the greatest stadium ever built. Though constantly redeveloped over the centuries, it lasted for 1,000 years. At its peak, it had seating for 250,000 and standing room for about another 120,000!
Image
I would certainly agree that cricket is the no 2 sport because of asia and the sport should grow more as india grows bigger and more influential.

British India consisted, I think, of what is now 7 countries, only 4 of which are test nations today. Cricket barely needs to do anything just hope for economic, social and political development in Aghanistan, Nepal and Myanmar and thats nations with a some 100 million population.

Africa should also be ripe for development as Kenya have shown, mainly as a second sport to football but thats fine. The game has colonial legacies there in places like Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda. the climate is good for the game and unlike other sports, top players will stay at home and play in africa and not move permanently to europe or the US when they turn 15.

but of course this is way off topic...
