I was surprised to see that 7 of the 13 venues SA put forward will only just meet the 40,000+ capacity criteria set out by FIFA for first and second round matches.
Its good to see that 12 of the 13 venues are ‘pure’ football stadiums (rectangular, no running track). The legacy of Rugby perhaps?
South Africa’ prospective match venues:
Johannesburg – Soccer City (94,700); Ellis Park (60,000)
Durban – King’s Park (60,000)
Cape Town – Newlands (40,000)
Bloemfontein – Free State Stadium (40,000)
Kimberley – Kimberley Stadium (40,000)
Nelspruit – Mbombela Stadium (40,000)
Orkney – Oppenheimer Stadium (40,000)
Polokwane – Polokwane Stadium (40,000)
Port Elizabeth – Port Elizabeth Stadium (49,500)
Pretoria – Loftus Versfeld (45,000); Rainbow Junction (41,000)
Rustenburg – Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace (40,000)

I don't think the venues in South Africa will even come close to the absolutely amazing ones built for the 2002 World Cup.

well, the FIFA president needed those african votes to get elected...Hiraldo wrote:A 2010 WC in South Africa won't be pretty. While the white population will be able to afford tickets, most of the black poplution will not. Since soccer in South Africa is (traditionally at least) the black's game, not many people there will be happy once this is all realised IMO.
But youre right, they really need to keep prices very very low

Well Done South Africa
The whole world will be happy that 95,000 people will get to watch the World Cup Final which is a whole lot better then the 80,000 in Yokohama four years ago.
The fact is they need to be competitivley priced as if they are too low, the funding for the tournament will be much lower. I feel sorry for the black population, but really they need to put on a spectacle and to do this you need high ticket prices. I mean I would pay $100 to watch Senegal v Rwanda in a world cup match, the prices to pay in Japan for the World Cup final was ridiculous, tickets started at $10,000
So thats why it cant be looked at as racially dividing, the demand world wide is reason why the prices will be expensive, Easier for people in Perth to go to just a 9 hour flight to Johannesburg
