Interesting report that since Ablett's announcement GC Suns have added 1,000 members. The reponse has been better than when Hunt signed on - obviously Aussie Rules followers waiting to see.

Re: AFL in Queensland
Excuse my ignorance, but why were the Bears based in GC in the first place?

Re: AFL in Queensland
The Brisbane Bears were a partnership between the QAFL and private investors led by Paul Cronin of The Sullivans fame who had made a packet in property investment/development. Interestingly he was a Fitroy fans so the push to relocate Fitzroy to Brisbane in the 1980s would have been really good for him.
Anyway, a condition of the licence was that the team be based in Brisbane. Eight weeks before the first match and they still didn't have a venue so they chose Carrara, which was in a poor state. Bleachers on the outer side and accessibility worse than it is today as Nerang-Broadbeach Rd was not as wide as it is now. Still, the VFL were faced with the embarrassment of that or nothing so they rejigged the licence to allow them to play there for one year.
By the end of 1987 the club was $12m in debt (yes...in one year...in 1987 money) and Christopher Skase was well in charge. He told the VFL he would not put up with the expense of relocating to Brisbane and that he'd rather leave the $12m club to the VFL's devices. The VFL did not want to cop that so they stayed at Carrara until the Gabba dog track (and Skase) disappeared.

First blood to Queensland in the cross over matches of the NEAFL today, Mt Gravatt knocked over Queanbeyan and Morningside beat Eastlake.
