On a small aside - at my local park.
They had erected AFL goalposts but after two years there wasnt enough juniors to make even a single team. The goalposts are now gone.
There are (now) two football fields used by my local team which has over 30 junior and senior teams.

A post on another forum gives some indication of the difficulty AFL has in getting traction in Western Sydney. Of course we don't know how typical this is.

Not to mention several tarpaulin like signs that have been hung up at prominent roundabouts in the Hills District, promoting the local AFL club, which have been vandalised, repaired, and vandalised once more.gyfox wrote:A post on another forum gives some indication of the difficulty AFL has in getting traction in Western Sydney. There are many Swans fans in the Hills District. The rest of the populace, couldn't give a sh*t, and probably resent the fact that local fields are being bastardised with four posts instead of two. There aren't enough grounds currently for the indigenous sports, let alone having an unwanted blow-in taking them over.
AD seriously over-estimated AFL's support in this demographic.
Oh, that's right, 20 years. lol.

Who is Patrick Smith and does he have targets in the AFL hierarchy?

Patrick Smith writes for The Australian. Typically he's the mouthpiece for "big hitting" issues in aussie rules. Only real bias is popularism. Pretty harmless overall, doesn't have the network and cut through of Caro, Sheahan etc.gyfox wrote:Who is Patrick Smith and does he have targets in the AFL hierarchy?

Awesome song. I didn't catch the lyrics apart from the 'Ole' bit at the beginning, middle and end.

I like it actually because it's meant to be "Ale", listen again with this in mind.Simmo79 wrote:Awesome song. I didn't catch the lyrics apart from the 'Ole' bit at the beginning, middle and end.
It's like they've invented a new letter between "A" and "O". Or could just be the effect of half of them singing Ale and half Ole.
Either way, a fitting if unintended tribute to our uniquely Australian mix of Football cultures. Kevin Sheedy would not approve.
Speaking of, apparently the much vaunted Auburn Giants are on the verge of folding, having struggled to maintain the numbers to field one full team.

$20m tipped in by the AFL and they still made a loss. Its interesting that they had a strong dip in sponsorship too.

Re: Greater Western Sydney Giants
They just front-loaded their sponsorships so they'd look more successful at the start. Funny, cos one of the arguments that their limited number of fans like to run is "well we don't have a lot of fans (yet) but we have one of the strongest sponsorship books in the country. We're bound to be a raging success soon".gyfox wrote:$20m tipped in by the AFL and they still made a loss. Its interesting that they had a strong dip in sponsorship too.

It's going pear-shaped but nobody within Aussie Rules land will admit it.

Re: Greater Western Sydney Giants
The Get Out of Western Sydney Giants are now looking at moving an additional home game to Canberra, for a 7/4 split.

Re: Greater Western Sydney Giants
If they're serious about Sydney they need to play more games there, not fewer. Their profile is already too low, taking another game out of town hurts the core objective.
