Dome on Boxing Day standby

Cricket Victoria confirmed today it had put Telstra Dome on standby for the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan.

While saying no decision on the MCG's suitability has to be made "for some weeks", Cricket Victoria chief executive Ken Jacobs said several days of heavy rain have forced a back-up plan.

The MCG is a bog, with the ground ripped up after the September 25 AFL grand final so an athletics track could be laid for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

"Cricket Victoria will continue to monitor the program of works at the ground with the Melbourne Cricket Club over the coming weeks, in accordance with our contractual arrangements with the club," said Jacobs.

"Although a decision regarding the suitability of the ground will not be made for some weeks, Cricket Victoria has already, as a precaution, placed Telstra Dome on standby in the event that the MCG is unavailable."

The Boxing Day MCG Test is a long-standing Australian sporting tradition.

The Dome will host a December 5 one-dayer between Australia and New Zealand. It has been the venue for off-season one-day internationals, thanks to its retractable roof.
