Stadium task force chief flags Subiaco demolition

The head of the task force looking into Western Australia's future stadium needs says Subiaco Oval may be demolished once a new stadium is built.

John Langoulant said the preferred sites for a new 60,000 seat, multi-purpose stadium are Mueller Park, across from Subiaco Oval, and in East Perth near the power station.

He said a proposal by the Western Australian Football Commission to redevelop Subiaco Oval would be examined but it was not a favoured option.

The task force also recommends that the WACA ground be downgraded over time to a 10,000 seat stadium, hosting domestic matches only.

Mr Langoulant said he wanted all sporting codes to get behind the new stadium, which he said needed to be built within 10 years.

"A lot of people are quite happy to sit at home and watch television and watch the sport on television," he said.

"What we need to do is ensure we've got facilities where people are going to say 'I want to go the major sporting stadium in Western Australia' just as they say they want to go to the MCG in Victoria.

"Why can't we have that sort of enthusiasm for our major stadium?"
