Stand by for MCG sporting update

The Melbourne Cricket Club is holding meetings with architects to improve the look of the famous Great Southern Stand, now nearly 15 years old.

It's believed the works will include the upgrade of function rooms and other internal fitouts.

The AFL, which has a members' section in the stand, will also be consulted.

MCC chief executive Stephen Gough confirmed yesterday that the club was looking at a range of options.

"There might be some things that are done in the short term and others in the long term because of costs," he said.

"For example, it won't be too long before Melbourne Football Club move across to Olympic Park, so what do you do with their space? Do you rent it out as offices or do you change it?"

The new state-of-the-art Northern Stand has prompted the Great Southern Stand upgrade. The southern stand was finished in December 1991.

An Australia-West Indies one-day cricket cliffhanger provided it with the perfect debut.

"Fourteen years is a long time," Mr Gough said. "It was just amazing when it opened, hearing that big wall of sound bounce off it on a game day.

"So it's just a matter of throwing options around to see what we can do. We haven't locked in anything exact yet."
