South Australian Baseball bids for new complex

Chris Egan • Monday 23rd October 2006

The South Australian Baseball Association has launched a 7.6 million dollar application for a new facility in Gepps Cross in Adelaide.

The venue would include a 500 seat grandstand and a capacity of around 4-5,000 in the SA Sports Park according to the General Manager of South Australian Baseball Michael Carter.

As with many other state associations, South Australian Baseball is on a revival with numbers reaching saturation point.

South Australian General Manager Michael Carter spoke to Austadiums.com on the issue.

"We've reached saturation point...we haven't got enough grounds, we don't have a facility required to host international baseball."

"We've moved into a financial position, we have cash reserves to invest back into the sport...we have increased baseball numbers across the board."

"Basically, the clubs have facilities, in terms of numbers of grounds it has...very few opportunities to expand in numbers."

Carter explained that they are awaiting a decision from the State Government on whether their 7.6 million dollar application is successful, while stating that Norwood Oval to get to Baseball standards was not viable.

"Costs would be significant to get back the facilities to standards... would just be very difficult to justify."
