WARL still hopeful of an NRL match in Perth in 2007

Chris Egan • Tuesday 5th December 2006

The WARL are still actively pursuing an NRL match, with Bill Nolsworthy confirming to Austadiums.com that they were still in the mix for an NRL match.

While the bid for an NRL match is particularly difficult in the current circumstances, when competitors such as Suncorp Stadium can offer 150,000-200,000 up front for an NRL match.

Austadiums.com spoke exclusively to Bill Nolsworthy, who explained the NRL are very keen to see games played in the west. "They are very keen for games to be played out west".

However, Nolsworthy explained that they were up against bids that the WARL could not compete with and that to persuade clubs to sell games to Perth would require a larger excreta payment than what is currently given by the NRL for clubs to take games outside of NSW/QLD.

"It's the only way you can get them (NRL games). When you have stadiums like Suncorp, and you have them guarantee 150-200,000 up front".

Despite the difficulties, they said that they were still in the hunt for an NRL game in 2007. With one of the major difficulties being able to persuade clubs to take a game away from their season ticket holders and sponsors.

"It takes a lot for them to take away the games from there ground, with issues such as corporates, sponsorship and season ticket holders".
