Souths and Dragons to return to SCG

Resi Mortgage Corporation presents a return to rugby league tradition when the South Sydney Rabbitohs do battle with the St George Illawarra Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday, May 25, at 3pm.

The two greatest clubs in the history of rugby league renew their intense rivalry at its traditional home, with two NRL competition points up for grabs.

"It's great that we are getting the opportunity to play one of our traditional rivals at the home of rugby league, the SCG," said Souths head coach Paul Langmack, a winner of three premierships at the SCG as part of the Canterbury Bulldogs.

"Having played at the SCG against the Rabbitohs and Dragons - I know how tough it is to get a win at the venue, which is really intimidating when packed to the rafters with supporters.

"I think it's brilliant that the NRL, South Sydney, St George Illawarra and Resi Mortgage Corporation have come together to make this match happen.

"There's not a fan anywhere that won't look forward to watching this match and spending a day at the SCG watching three grades playing good rugby league," he concluded.

NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said the Telstra Premiership was fully behind the decision to play at the SCG.

"This is one of the game's great rivalries and I think it will be a spectacular event for supporters of both clubs.

"The memory of some of the great clashes between the two clubs in the sixties and seventies at the ground will be on many people's minds as they attend on May 25.

"The SCG is rich in Rugby League tradition and there's been enormous support this year for some of the game's traditional venues."

On the only occasion South Sydney played St George Illawarra at the SCG the Rabbitohs won 25-24 in front of a crowd of 15,324. St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown played in that encounter.

"Unfortunately we fell short that day after leading at half time," said Brown.

"I think it will be exciting for all the players as well as the fans and sponsors - it's a pretty special feeling to run out there and play at the SCG.

"I think it's going to be a great afternoon of rugby league."

There will be a full parade of South Sydney and St George legends before the main game as well as some fantastic pre-match entertainment.

"Resi is proud to be associated with rugby league's historic return to the SCG - we think it's a great opportunity for success for the South Sydney Rabbitohs," said Peter James, Resi Managing Director and keen league supporter.

"This is a very special event for the fans who are in touch with the great tradition of rugby league at the mighty SCG."

Resi Mortgage Corporation is one of the largest and longest established mortgage managers in Australia.
