The venues for the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup have been announced with the Melbourne Cricket Ground set to host the final while.

A total of 14 venues - seven each in Australia and New Zealand - have been selected to host the 44-day tournament, to be held in February and March 2015.

The MCG also hosted the final the last time Australia hosted the World Cup in 1992 when a then-world record crowd of 87,000 attended the tournament decider between Pakistan and England. Bidding had been strong between the Victorian and New South Wales Governments with Australia's largest stadium given the nod.

With the final set for March 29, the AFL will be forced to move some games away from the venue across town to Etihad Stadium and possibly to Simonds Stadium in Geelong.

The seven Australian venues to host matches are the MCG, SCG, Gabba, Adelaide Oval, WACA, Bellerive Oval and Manuka Oval.

The Gabba appears to be the big loser, with the Brisbane test venue not hosting any finals matches. Meanwhile, Manuka Oval in Canberra is the only non-test venue in Australia to be given matches.

In New Zealand, Eden Park, Westpac Stadium, Seddon Park, McLean Park, Saxton Oval, Hagley Oval and University Oval will play host to games.

The lengthy tournament sees 49 matches played over 44 days across two countries. A global TV audience of over a billion is expected.

The Sydney Cricket Ground and Auckland's Eden Park will host the two semi-finals while quarter-finals will be played at the MCG, SCG, Adelaide Oval and Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

When the MCG last hosted the final in 1992, the Great Southern Stand had just been completed. Over the past couple of years the stand has been refurbished and some further work around the venue may be a possibility in the lead-up to the tournament. Total seating capacity is around 95,000 with standing room boosting total capacity to 100,000.

The Adelaide Oval is currently being redeveloped with capacity set to be around 50,000 once completed while a new grandstand is being constructed at the SCG, introducing some much needed state-of-the-art facilities. Meanwhile, lights have recently been installed at Manuka Oval along with additional seating.
