Cockburn to unleash all its powers to gain 70,000 seat stadium

Chris Egan • Monday 25th October 2004

Cockburn Mayor Stephen Lee has outlined to austadiums.com that the proposed Jandakot stadium may still come to fruition. The outlined plans include a stadium that could cater for 70,000 people and be within minutes of the main regional centres of the southern suburbs and CBD.

Mr Lee explained that the city has not lost hope in gaining a 70,000 seat stadium for his council, but admitted the funding was beyond what the city could afford.

"We as a City very much hope it is still on the cards...the construction and possession of a stadium of this size, up to 70,000 seats, is beyond the means of a Local Government to resource"

Yet Mr. Lee said the council was unleashing all its energy to make this dream come to fruition. "We are attempting to float the concept of this stadium with as many people as possible to ensure a wonderful opportunity is not lost."

While the stadium's proposed location on the Kwinana Freeway offers many benefits. "The location of this proposal is prime...the site is fifteen minutes, by freeway, south of the Perth CBD; Fifteen minutes east of Fremantle and fifteen minutes north of Rockingham."

The Mayor said that the proposed stadium was more cost-effective then the inner city stadium Subiaco Oval. "Events at Subiaco redeveloped or otherwise, are limited due to existing constraints; our site is a greenfield site".

The prospect of many international events being attracted to Cockburn Central was unlimited stated Mr Lee. "We believe the only limits to the events that can occur at this proposed location are the imaginations and desires of the proponents."
