SCG gets federal funding for new stand

Austadiums • Thursday 4th January 2007
Australian Prime Minister John Howard has announced that the Federal Government will contribute $25 million towards the building of a new grandstand at the SCG.

Howard made the announcement on Thursday, during day three of the fifth 3 mobile Ashes Test at the ground, and added that his government hopes its New South Wales counterpart matches that amount.

"The SCG is one of the finest sporting venues in the world," Howard said of the development that is to occur on the old Hill site.

"The new grandstand, which will replace the Doug Walters Stand and fill the void between the Churchill and O'Reilly Stands, will make the SCG even better by improving spectator facilities and increasing ground capacity."

"I am pleased that the Australian government will be helping to ensure that the SCG remains a world-class venue for national and international sporting events."
