Telstra Dome may bid for cricket hosting rights

Victorian cricket fans could be watching their heroes under the roof of Telstra Dome from 2009, with a stalemate between CV and the MCC.

A stalemate in negotiations between Cricket Victoria and the Melbourne Cricket Club has opened the door for Telstra Dome to tender for the Boxing Day Test, one-day internationals, Victorian cricket matches and the new international and domestic Twenty20 competitions.

Telstra Dome chief executive Ian Collins said he would like to lure "some or all" international cricket away from the MCG.

"A big advantage is the certainty of play, because of the roof. That's important for television and the public.

"And we can drop a wicket in pretty quickly. I think we have a lot to offer."

Sources say CV and the MCC are $60 million apart in negotiations.

It is believed CV wants $9 million annually during a new 10-year deal, while the MCC is looking at $3 million, the same as last year's Ashes series.

Telstra Dome is looking to secure some cricket in Victoria at the end of the MCC's contract, though it concedes the Boxing Day Test's natural home is at the MCG, where almost 100,000 fans can be accommodated.
