Waugh backs Telstra Stadium

Australian Test captain Steve Waugh has lent his support to the idea of Telstra Stadium becoming a regular venue for international one-day matches.

Speaking from the centre of the pitch of Sydney's major Olympic venue where Waugh's NSW team will host an ING Cup match against South Australia on Sunday week, the former Aussie one-day captain said he doesn't feel switching one-day games away from the SCG would serve as a serious break from tradition.

"It's a great venue, players want to play at the best possible venues and this looks fantastic," Waugh said.

"They want to play in front of big crowds, so if it fits the bill, then why not?" said Waugh.

Playing matches at Telstra Stadium would also provide Australian cricket officials with a financial windfall as its capacity is almost twice that of the SCG.

"The pitch looks good. It's nice and flat, that's the main thing with one-day cricket," Waugh added.

"It's obviously a while to go before the match, but I think if they roll it and get a bit of hardness, there should be plenty of runs there."
