Massive signs erected at Telstra Stadium

Austadiums • Friday 14th February 2003

The largest corporate identification signs in Australia were erected at Sydney's Telstra Stadium last Monday and Tuesday, February 10 and 11.

Workmen took nine hours over two days to position the final 378 square metre "Telstra Stadium" sign at the home of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Two 80 tonne cranes, the largest in Australia, worked simultaneously to lift the 42 metre long and nine metre high "Telstra Stadium" sign into position outside the eastern stand.

Once in position, electricians will use over one kilometre of wiring over the next two weeks to enable the signage to be illuminated at night.

The signs will be easily seen during daytime and evening from the M4 freeway. Signage work is being undertaken by the Claude Group who have specially imported 6 metre x 2.1 metre oversized polycarbonate lightweight sheets to minimise joins in the signage letters.

Telstra Stadium Chief Executive, Mr Ken Edwards, said he was delighted how the signs were integrated into the Stadium form.

"The signs are gently faceted to match the geometry of the Stadium while observing Telstra's corporate signage guidelines," explained Mr Edwards.

"The perforated metal cladding panels and tubular steel framework mirror the materials of the Stadium," he added.

Claude Group Project Manager, Mr Gordon Bobbin, said the signage letters would appear to float during both day and night viewing on the semi-perforated background.

"This semi-perforated background will allow light to enter the light wells which are a feature of the Stadium's design," said Mr Bobbin.
