Sports mad spectators have been promised a show to remember when they flood into the new bubble stadium, dubbed Victoria's "latest architectural wonder".

Rugby league legend Hazem El Masri will boot the first goal at AAMI Park in a dazzling opening ceremony that will include a laser light show and music.

More than 31,000 people will pour through the gates to watch the Test between Australia and New Zealand.

Construction crews worked through the night to make sure everything was in place.

"After more than two years of construction, Melbourne's rectangular stadium will open in style - heralding an exciting new chapter for sport in Victoria," Sport Minister James Merlino said.

Melbourne's indigenous community will provide a special blessing before the Australian national anthem is performed by pop singer Katie Noonan.

The New Zealand anthem will be sung by classical performer Elizabeth Marvelley.

The crowd's proximity to the on-field action has been a big selling point for the venue that will be home to the A-league's Melbourne Victory and rugby league's Storm.

Spectators in the highest seats will still be closer to the action than a soccer goalkeeper is to the centre line.

Premier John Brumby and Major Projects Minister Tim Pallas were led through the venue ahead of its opening.

"There are no interruptions in terms of the view," Mr Pallas said. "Every seat is a premium seat. You might feel so close to the action that you could reach out and touch the players."

But crowds at the sell-out match have been warned to expect teething problems.

"There will be 31,000 here, it's a first event for us, we think everything is going to be fine but we ask you to work with us in case there is the odd glitch," Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust chairman Russell Caplan said.

Mr Brumby reiterated concerns that the penalties dished out to the Melbourne Storm after its breach of the salary cap were too harsh.

"If you break the rules in sport you need to have firm sanctions and punishment," Mr Brumby said.

"But we thought the penalties going forward were unreasonable. Once the salary cap is back in order you want the Storm to be able to compete, to win points."

Gates open at 6pm on Friday, with entertainment at 7.30pm and kick-off 8pm. The Test will be broadcast live in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.
