Western Australia's home of cricket has possibly been given life beyond the opening of Perth's new stadium at Burswood which is scheduled for completion in 2018.

On Tuesday, Australian batsman George Bailey and WA Sports Minister Terry Waldron had a quick game of cricket on the exact spot where the drop-in pitches will be situated once the $700 million 60,000-seat stadium is completed.

Waldron said he's confident the new venue and the WACA Ground can co-exist in Perth despite the majority of large-scale cricket matches being scheduled at the new Burswood site.

"The WACA is the home of cricket in Western Australia, and will continue to be the home of cricket in Western Australia," he said.

Larger Test matches, one-day internationals and Twenty20 are expected to be played at the new venue while lower drawing international matches and state fixtures could remain at the traditional home of cricket.

Cricket Australia recently took away Perth's 2014/15 Test match as one needed to be cut from the schedule due to the Cricket World Cup. The WACA's small 17,000 capacity and poor facilities no doubt contributed to CA's decision.

"This stadium will be world-class right from the start. I'm sure once people come to this stadium for the big games of cricket, they'll want to watch them here."

Construction of the long-overdue new Perth Stadium is expected to commence in late-2014 with three consortiums currently bidding for the contract.

The new stadium, to be situated near the Crown Entertainment Complex at Burswood, will be home of the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers as well as major rugby and football fixtures.

A potential design for the new venue was announced during Australia's bid for the 2018-2022 FIFA World Cup although it remains to be seen what the final design will be. For the AFL, it's the final piece of the jigsaw in terms of national stadium development with Patersons Stadium clearly now the poorest regular venue in the competition.
