MCG Technology Upgrade

The MCG has announced the next phase of a $45 million technology upgrade including in-stadium Wi-Fi, external themed LED lighting and new IPTV screens.

In conjunction with partners Cockram, IBM and Cisco, the technology infrastructure will be progressively installed during 2015. Some of the external LED lighting has already been installed on the western end of the Great Southern Stand. It follows in the footsteps of other grounds such as the Adelaide Oval and ANZ Stadium with the stadium set to light up in the colours of the home team.

High-density Wi-Fi and 800 new IPTV screens will be installed to deliver a connected and personalised fan experience. Meanwhile, there will also be improved operations, safety and security.

The first phase of the $45 million investment was completed in December 2013 with the installation of two new high-definition video screens which are the largest in Australia at 332 square metres and new high-definition television production facilities.

“I am delighted that the MCG will soon be one of the most connected stadiums in the country,” said MCC CEO Stephen Gough. “This is a significant investment to improve and personalise the MCG customer experience and also operate a more efficient stadium.”

"This will take the fan experience to another level with significant improvements to the MCG's connectivity,” Mr Gough said. “This increased capacity will be great news for the four million people who visit the MCG each year.”

The IPTV solution will see installation of 800 high-definition screens. Fans will be able to watch high-definition replays and keep track of the action as it unfolds. Coupled with existing screens, a total of 2800 televisions around the stadium will mean that fans won’t miss a moment.

Approximately 240 LED lamps will light the entire underside of the upper area of Level 4 seating, enabling the exterior of the stadium to be lit up in team/club colours, allowing AFL and cricket tenants to differentiate their home matches.

The MCG is set for a bumper 2015 with the Cricket World Cup including the Final, the International Champions Cup involving Manchester City, Real Madrid and AS Roma, as well as the 2015 AFL Premiership Season and Grand Final.
