Baseball set to return

Austadiums • Thursday 27th May 2004

A fully-fledged National Baseball League is set to commence operations in Australia in 2005, returning the sport to the national stage.

The Australian Baseball Federation and the United States Major Baseball League have backed the new proposal.

Financial constraints caused the previous national league to collapse in 1999.

Australia is seen as a rich nation for developing baseball talent, with around 100 players currently competing professionally overseas.

About the same number are currently playing college baseball in America and national coach Jon Deeble said the Major League was prepared to invest the money, to support talented Australian players.

"The interest for them is that they want Australians going over there, they want to see the best players playing in major league baseball, so they're prepared to put the money in," Deeble told ABC Sport.
