Ponsford stand lives on

Austadiums • Thursday 23rd September 2004

The Ponsford Stand lives again at the MCG following the confirmation by the Melbourne Cricket Club and the Victorian government that the new western part of the redeveloped ground would be named after the former Australian Test opening batsman.

The old Western Stand, which was demolished after the 2002 Grand Final was also named after Ponsford.

Victorian premier Steve Bracks unveiled a foundation stone at the MCG on Thursday, featuring a mural celebrating his career.

The new grandstand has been the home for MCC members through the 2004 AFL season and will be so until late next season, when the new members section of the ground is unveiled.

Capacity for Saturday's Grand Final will be 80,000 and will increase to more than 100,000 once the redevelopment is completed, in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
