Old Sydney Showground

Closed/Former Venue

The former Sydney Showground is situated next to the SCG at Moore Park and was the site of the Sydney Royal Easter Show from 1882 until 1997, when the Show was moved to the new Sydney Showground at Sydney Olympic Park. Following this, the site was then leased to News Corporation on a 99-year lease from the New South Wales Government to be used for the site of Fox Studios Australia (now Disney Studios Australia), and now forms part of The Entertainment Quarter. The re-purposed venue maintained some of the existing grandstands, developing them into new facilities.

The venue featured a capacity of around 40,000 and played host to many sporting events and cultural events, including World Series Cricket in the mid 1970's, soccer internationals and the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Motor Racing was a big part of the Showground over the years, serving as Sydney's Speedway between 1926 and 1996, while it was also used as one of two Sydney Harness racing venues. The old showground was expanded many times during its history and at its peak, it could hold over 90,000 spectators.

Plans were announced in February 2023 to reinvigorate the venue by constructing an AFL oval on within the main Sydney Showground arena, with a capacity of 4,000 and the ability to host AFLW matches for the Sydney Swans. The new venue will be known as the Showring Oval.
