Lakeside Stadium
Lakeside Stadium, now officially known as Melbourne Sports Centres - Lakeside, is an athletics and football venue located at Albert Park. The venue assumed the mantle of Melbourne's premier athletics venue when it reopened in October 2011 following a major redevelopment, taking over from Olympic Park. The venue was originally known as the Lake Oval (or South Melbourne Cricket Ground) and served as the home ground of the South Melbourne Swans from 1878 until they relocated to Sydney in 1982. In 1995, the venue was reborn as Bob Jane Stadium – an 18,000-capacity rectangular stadium to host former NSL club South Melbourne.
In 2010/2011, the venue was revamped to become the home of Victorian Athletics. Features of the redevelopment included a new northern grandstand, video scoreboard, broadcast-quality lighting, a IAAF-approved synthetic 8-lane running track with a 10-lane, 110m straight, 50m indoor running track, new FIFA-sized natural grass pitch for soccer, six-lane warm up track and training facilities for athletics. Terracing is located at either end of the field, giving Lakeside Stadium a total capacity of around 12,000.
The 1926 heritage grandstand was restored and is now the home of the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS), while the existing main grandstand and function centre was also restored during the redevelopment, as was the administration facilities for the South Melbourne Football Club.
