Cairns Convention Centre
The Cairns Convention Centre is a multi-purpose arena located in Cairns, North Queensland. Situated in the CBD, stage one of the venue opened in 1996, with the 5,300-capacity arena added in 1999, coinciding with the entry of the Cairns Taipans into the NBL, where they continue to play their home games (with the exception of the 2020/21 season where they played at the temporary Cairns Pop Up Arena). The venue is often referred to as "the Snakepit" for Taipans games. It hosted preliminary rounds of the men's basketball competition at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and has also staged netball matches for the Australian Diamonds. The venue was Australia's first regional convention centre and the country's first environmentally designed public building.
The venue was renovated in 2005 and 2011 and is currently undergoing a significant $176-million expansion and refurbishment, with works due to be completed in 2022. The 10,000 sqm expansion includes a large undercover, tropically planted forecourt, an expanded main entry lobby, a 410 seat plenary lecture space, three 110 seat meeting rooms, exhibition space for up to 30 display booths, a 500 seat banquet/ multi-functional space with a large adjoining pre-function space, external decks with spectacular views over Trinity Inlet.
Cairns Convention Centre is owned by the Queensland Government and is managed by ASM Global.
