The ICC has confirmed the venues for the 2022 T20 World Cup, with the MCG to host the final, as Australia will look to defend their title on home soil, after defeating New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday.

Originally due to be held in Australia in October 2020, the men’s world cup was postponed due to Covid and then relocated, with Australia then scheduled to host 2022 tournament instead.

It followed the successful running of the 2020 Women’s World Cup in February-March last year, which included a world record crowd for a women’s sporting event, when 86,174 fans attended the MCG to see Australia defeat India in the final.

Seven host cities have been announced for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia, with the tournament beginning on October 16 and ending with the final at the MCG, to be played under lights on November 13.

There will be 45 matches played across stadiums in Adelaide, Brisbane, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The semi-finals will be hosted at the Sydney Cricket Ground and Adelaide Oval on 9 and 10 November respectively.

Following the success of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2020 and a two year postponement, our sights are now firmly set on planning for the 2022 event in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee,” Head of Events Chris Tetley said.

Melbourne Cricket Club, venue manager of the MCG, CEO Stuart Fox spoke about the excitement in hosting the 2022 Men’s T20 Final at the MCG.

“On behalf of our members and everyone at the MCC, congratulations to the Aussie team for their outstanding victory in the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Final,” Mr Fox said.

“It’s the perfect lead in to next year’s tournament where the MCG will host seven matches, including the Final!

“After hosting a historic 86,174 fans for the Women’s Final in March 2020, we can’t wait to welcome fans back into the MCG to enjoy the men’s tournament. We thrive on bringing passionate people together to witness the greatest sporting moments and know the 2022 tournament will deliver a tremendous spectacle.”
