Sports facilities across NSW will receive major upgrades following the awarding of grants in round one of the NSW Government’s Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund.

Almost $100 million was awarded to 38 clubs, associations, sporting organisations and councils across NSW, including a $5 million redevelopment of Henson Park which will create a universally inclusive multi-sport venue capable of hosting all levels of female competition.

Minister for Tourism and Sport Stuart Ayres said the Fund would keep communities across NSW heathy, active and connected.

“Sport is one of the greatest connectors of people and communities in this state, and age, ability and gender should be no barrier,” Mr Ayres said.

“This funding will modernise facilities for local clubs, associations and councils, and enable more local residents to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation.”

“The redevelopment of Henson Park is just one example of the NSW’s government’s commitment to providing inclusive and modern sports infrastructure. This project will deliver new AFLW standard changerooms, inclusive amenities and broadcast facilities to ensure the venue is capable of hosting elite women’s sport and provide a heightened spectator experience.”

Henson Park, the traditional home of the Newtown Jets, will host AFLW home matches for the Sydney Swans who’ll join the competition for the upcoming season. It hosted two matches for the GWS Giants during the past season.

Tiffany Robertson, Head of AFL NSW/ACT, thanked the NSW Government’s contribution and said the AFL would benefit greatly from Henson Park’s redevelopment.

“Henson Park is one of Sydney’s premier suburban ground’s and thanks to the NSW Government’s contribution, its facilities will be inclusive for female competition, Newtown Jets and broader community to enjoy.

“Australian rules has been played at Henson Park since the 1940s and we are excited to be part of its preservation and upgrade, ensuring players at the elite and community level can enjoy the iconic oval and its facilities for years to come.”

The Multi-Sport Community Facility Fund is a two-year, $200 million program with grants of $1–$5 million available. Round 2 will open 27 June 2022 and close 2 September 2022.

“I strongly encourage all eligible applicants including sporting organisations and local councils to apply,” Mr Ayres said.
