Construction work has commenced at East Fremantle Oval, while the WA Government has increased its investment for an all-abilities nature play space and skate zone.

The project got underway in November last year with the demolition of the Merv Cowan stand and asbestos removal, while the main building earthworks have now begun.

Inspecting the progress today, Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman announced the McGowan Government was again boosting its investment in the project, with a $1.3 million Lotterywest Grant for an all-abilities nature play space and skate zone.

This takes the McGowan Government's total contribution to $26.3 million - including its initial $20 million election commitment and an additional $5 million contribution in April last year due to rising construction costs.

“I am thrilled to see construction work finally happening at the East Fremantle Oval precinct,” Templeman said.

“With state-of-the-art facilities this will be a vibrant hub for local sporting clubs and the wider community; a welcoming space to keep everyone of all ages and abilities active, healthy, and connected.”

Once complete, the East Fremantle Oval redevelopment will provide an integrated community and sporting precinct with facilities for the East Fremantle Football Club, East Fremantle Bowls Club, and East Fremantle Croquet Club.

It will be a space for members of the community to gather, connect, recreate, and participate, offering community gardens, a café, health club, function centre, meeting rooms and the all-abilities nature play space.

During the ground’s redevelopment, East Fremantle Football Club have relocated their WAFL home games to the WACA, which was reconfigured prior to the 2022 season to once again allow Australian rules football matches to be played at the cricket venue.
