2024 Australian Open breaks attendance records

The 2024 Australian Open was attended by more than one million spectators – the first time a tennis Grand Slam has exceeded the magic million milestone.

For the first time, the 2024 event at Melbourne Park was extended to 15 days, starting on a Sunday, with a total of 1,020,763 spectators attending the event, smashing the previous record of 839,192 over 14 days set in 2023.

89,894 fans attended the newly-named AO Opening Week, incorporating the qualifying and charity matches, meaning a total of 1,110,657 fans attended Melbourne Park across the three weeks from Monday 8 to Sunday 28 January.

An average of 68,051 fans attended the event during the two weeks (up 21% compared to 2023), with records were broken for 16 individual sessions and nine day/night totals.

The middle Saturday was the highest attended day/night of the 2024 Australian Open, with 93,723 spectators through the gates.

More than 19,000 people attended Finals Festival at John Cain Arena which featured live performances from more than 16 artists including Peach PRC, Yaeji, Tash Sultana, DMAs, Ruel, The Jungle Giants, Groove Armada and Rudimental.

Meanwhile, 321,069 people attended the various Australian Open lead-in tournaments, held in Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Perth and Sydney, with more than 1.43 million people attending events across the entire Australian Summer of Tennis.

The 2024 event saw Aryna Sabalenka defend her Australian Open women’s singles crown, claiming back-to-back titles, while Jannik Sinner won his maiden Grand Slam men’s singles title.

Tennis Australia has extended its contract with the Victorian government to ensure Melbourne Park continues hosting the officially branded ‘Grand Slam of Asia Pacific’ until at least 2046.
