MCC Refutes Non-Smoking Claims

Despite criticism through the week by the Victorian government's smoking and health program, Quit Victoria, the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has refuted claims that the MCG would be lifting its ban on smoking as sections of the stadium's $430 million redevelopment come on stream later this year.

The MCC's general manager, Stephen Gough, said the speculation about a relaxation of the smoking ban revolves around the balconies on the new stand. He said that the design concept has provided flexibility as to how the balconies are utilised, citing the example that while at the western end patrons will be able to look out over the cricket practice wickets, other balconies may have catering facilities installed.

He said there are operational efficiencies to be gained if some of the balconies are designated smoking zones, but stressed no decisions have been made on the use of the balconies and any recommendations must still be put before the MCC committee, the MCG Trust and the State Government for consideration.

Gough indicated that even if some balconies are set-aside for smokers, the critical point is that the people would still be outside the stadium and wouldn't affect the environment of spectators.

Quit Victoria through the week stated that the proposal to re-introduce smoking at the MCG is backward and completely out of step with community expectations. Quit executive director, Todd Harper, pointed out that the current arrangements where patrons are required to leave the ground have been working well and that the measures have been in place for several years now.
