MCG’s new PA system wins industry award
The MCG’s new public announcement (PA) and Emergency Warning and Intercommunication System (EWIS) has received global recognition, taking out the prize for Venue Project of the Year at the 2020 AV Technology Awards.
Working in partnership with Auditoria on design and Rutledge AV, A Diversified Company, as head contractor, in October 2019 the Melbourne Cricket Club, as ground managers of the MCG, commenced work on a totally new, custom designed audio solution for the iconic stadium.
Fan feedback across recent years showed that the existing, 10-year old audio system was not delivering the desired quality, consistency or experience for attendees.
Debuting at the 2019 Boxing Day Test and representing an overall investment of $25 million, the new system delivers a consistent, clear audio experience at all touchpoints – from the entry information broadcast at gates and the team songs that are pumped through the seating bowl, to safety information shared via the EWIS in the case of an emergency.
In addition to the 3500 new speakers which were installed throughout the seating bowl, function spaces, bars and concourse areas, the project also saw more than 3,000 square metres of sound-absorbing acoustic panelling installed in the stadium, to further enhance the audio experience.
MCC CEO Stuart Fox said the Club was thrilled to see the PA project recognised on a global scale.

“This significant upgrade to our audio system and investment in new technology ensures that all patrons have an incredible experience and enjoy, clear, immersive audio, no matter where they sit,” he said.
The AV Technology Awards are designed to recognise and celebrate the innovation and accomplishments of companies and individuals working and operating across the global AV industry.
