The NBL has declared Hobart’s MyState Bank Arena needs an increase to its capacity to cater for the growing demand for Tasmania JackJumpers games.

The Mercury has revealed the NBL has begun discussions with the Tasmanian and Federal Governments on a $40 million redevelopment to increase the seating capacity of MyState Bank Arena to 6,000.

Austadiums crowd figures show the JackJumpers averaged 4,357 home attendances during the 2022 calendar year, which is 91% of the  venue’s 4,800 capacity – the highest percentage of any venue in Australia.

NBL and JackJumpers owner Larry Kestelman referenced the demand for Tasmania tickets as one of the main reasons behind the push to increase the arena.

“The Tasmania JackJumpers have one of the most passionate fanbases in all of Australian sport,” Kestelman said.

“The demand for JackJumpers tickets is significantly above the stadium’s capacity, with every game this and last season sold out. New memberships sold out in 26 minutes this season, and the club is now investigating a waiting list to become a season ticket holder.

“This highlights how much Tasmania has gotten behind the JackJumpers, but also emphasises the need for increased capacity at the venue to accommodate more fans and give more Tasmanians the opportunity to see their beloved team play live.”

Formerly known as the Derwent Entertainment Centre, the outdated Hobart venue was redeveloped at a cost of $66 million and rebranded MyState Bank Arena ahead of the JackJumpers entry into the league in 2021.

It’s believed the proposed upgrade would extend the second tier of seating so it extends around the whole court.
