NSW Labor Party promise to scrap stadium funding

Planning approval for the demolition of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium is expected within days, however the NSW Labor party will pull all funding if it wins government in the March election.

Labor leader Michael Daley said, as premier, he would scrap the entire $1.5 billion earmarked for the stadiums by the Berejiklian government, and instead invest it in schools and hospitals.

Mr Daley believes the 30-year-old stadium which recently closed is a “perfectly good” stadium and has given stern words to the SCG Trust.

"I'm saying very clearly to the SCG Trust today: do not sign contracts for the demolition of this stadium. Do not demolish this stadium. If you do, you will not get a single cent of free public money from me if I am elected premier in March of next year," Mr Daley said.

Funding would also be scrapped for the major redevelopment of ANZ Stadium.

It would mean the future of the NRL Grand Final being held in NSW would be put at risk, with the breaking of a memorandum between the NRL and NSW Government – which guaranteed the showpiece event and State of Origin match in Sydney for the next 25 years on the proviso Allianz Stadium was rebuilt and ANZ Stadium redeveloped.

NSW voters in the March elections will have the chance to prove if NSW is a true sporting state or not.
