Work underway at Hindmarsh Stadium ahead of 2023 World Cup
Upgrade works have commenced at Adelaide’s Coopers Stadium, to improve facilities ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The South Australian Government announced funding of $52 million towards the project that’ll breathe new life into the rectangular stadium.
Unveiled in November last year, the redevelopment includes an upgrade to the eastern grandstand with new roof, function space and corporate facilities. New lighting will be installed, two new video replay screens, upgraded sound system and LED system.
The playing surface will also be replaced, change rooms refurbished, new turnstiles and media facilities.
The boutique stadium’s capacity of 16,500 appears unlikely to be increased with the upgrade, but its enhanced facilities will ensure it remains one of the best football grounds in Australia.
The stadium was last redeveloped when it hosted matches during the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and another upgrade was required to ensure it hosted matches for the Women’s World Cup in 2023, with Adelaide Oval considered the alternative venue.
Hindmarsh Stadium is one of 10 venues across Australia and New Zealand selected to host matches in the 2023 tournament which is set to attract huge global audiences. Adelaide is one of five Australian host cities selected, after Newcastle and Launceston were scratched off the final list.
Other venues to host matches in Australia are Suncorp Stadium, AAMI Park, HBF Park, Stadium Australia and the new Sydney Football Stadium.
